Dalhousie (2,039 m), established in 1854 by the british governor General Lord Dalhousie. was first conceived as a sanotorium in 1850. After independence Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal nehru visited Dalhousie in 1952 & urged the Indian army to occupy the barracks & some govt. offices were established in the town. Gradually Dalhousie started to change from a summer resort to an all the year round town.

Dalhousie is one the greenest of hill stations. The most unique & fascinating aspect of Dalhousie is the long, calm & delighful walks that it offers in the lap of nature. Despite its being a heavily thronged tourist spot, Dalhousie is free of dirt & grime as well as hustle & bustle of the concrete jungle. Thick forests of pine & deodar have undoubtedly contributed in more than one way towards retaining the charm of Dalhousie.
Nobel Laureate Rabinderanath Tagore during his childhood visited Dalhosie in 1873 with his father , thrilled by the natural charm of the place, he recorded his impressions about Dalhousie in his work "My Reminiscences": "My eyes had no rest the entire day, as great was my fear lest anything should escape them. Why had we to leave to leave such spot behind, cried my heart. Why could we not stay on there forever."
Due magnificent scenery , Dalhousie is becoming a favourite with Bollywood. Many films, including 1942-A love Story, Himalayan putra, Dil-Se, Gaddar, Taal and many more were filmed here.
